NORTHAMPTON — Using a balanced offensive attack, the Wahconah football team beat Northampton 34-0 Friday night.
The Warriors (6-0, 3-0 Suburban South) threw 27 passes and rushed 33 times in the win.
“Balance is everything in any game you play,” Wahconah coach Gary Campbell said. “We need to keep teams off balance.”
Warrior quarterback Tim Clayton went 18-for-28 for 219 yards, completing passes to six different receivers.
“We got a bunch who can catch,” Campbell said. “We have to look for consistency.”
Dane Campbell led the Warriors with seven catches for 75 yards.
When Wahconah wasn’t passing, the ball went to either Tanner Hastings (16 carries, 129 yards) or Nate Zink (nine carries, 75 yards).
Hastings had a 6-yard touchdown to open the scoring, and a 35-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Hastings and Zink brought a blend of speed and power in their running for the Warriors.
Zink had two rushing touchdowns as well for the Warriors, one from 27 yards and another from 9 yards.
The Warriors led 7-0 at halftime, overcoming a bit of a slow start.
Wahconah had a turnover on downs deep in Hamp territory on the game’s first drive. Clayton also threw an interception to Northampton’s Jake Brittain, which was in Northampton’s side of the field.
“There’s no doubt we didn’t come off the bus well,” Campbell said. “Credit to Northampton though. But we made certain adjustments and played our football game.”
Northampton’s (2-4, 0-3) defense played better, but once again the offense could not produce. Outside of a long 71-yard completion from Tom Jacques to Henry Doherty, Hamp struggled to move the ball.
“We changed up our defensive scheme,” Northampton coach Eddie Jewel said. “We moved some guys around. We had a good week of practice. Our offense is just killing us.”
Andy Grygorcewicz had consecutive catches for 29 yards on a first half Northampton drive.
Grygorcewicz added an interception, which he returned 38-yards to Wahconah’s 12-yard line in the second quarter.
Wahconah’s Austin Roughley picked off Jacques on the next play to end the threat.
Jake Gai had an interception as well for Wahconah with Damien Kopetchny adding a sack.
Natnael Walton had his first career sack for the Blue Devils.
In the fourth quarter, Wahconah got five carries and 20 yards from Matt Mathers.
Wahconah ended the scoring in the fourth, when Ethan Scott found the edge for a 14-yard touchdown.
