NORTHAMPTON — A man and a woman were arrested outside the Northampton Courthouse Friday afternoon after being subdued by at least 10 court officers.
At least one court officer was on top of the man in an attempt to handcuff him. Some of the court officers appeared to have come over from the probate court on King Street.
A Gazette reporter as well as at least two court clerks watched the incident unfold from a window in the courthouse. It is not clear what caused the incident.
A woman who appeared to know the man yelled at court officers to watch the man’s face as he was on his stomach on the ground. At one point, the woman went toward the man on the ground and the officers and was physically stopped and restrained by court officers.
At least five Northampton Police Officers, including a plain clothes officer, responded shortly after the pair had been handcuffed.
Police put a spit mask on the man before officers lifted him from the ground. As he was standing waiting to be escorted to a cruiser he could be heard repeatedly yelling what sounded like “who touched me?”
A bloodied scrape on the man’s elbow could be seen, as well as on a court officer.
Police declined to release further information Friday night.
