CHICOPEE — The Northampton football team let a golden opportunity slip through its fingers in a 14-0 loss to Chicopee, Friday night at Szot Park.
Anthony DeJesus’ interception with 8 minutes, 22 second remaining in a one-score game gave Northampton a first down on the Chicopee 13-yard line. But one run and three failed pass attempts kept the Blue Devils out of the end zone.
Northampton (3-7) tried to exploit Chicopee’s undersized secondary, but the Pacers defensive backfield made up for its lack of size with quickness to prevent the Blue Devils from completing long passes.
The longest pass play for Northampton was a 21-yard completion from Tom Jacques to Andy Grygorcewicz.
“We just didn’t execute,” first-year Northampton coach Eddie Jewell said. “This was a tough loss, but we have to tip our hats to Chicopee.”
The dual quarterback situation between Grygrocewicz and Jacques did not work for the Blue Devils. Northampton tried to take advantage of Grygorcewicz’ size when he lined up at split end, but the Pacers secondary made the stops.
Chicopee put the game out of reach with 1:54 remaining when quarterback Dylan Conover ran for an 11-yard touchdown for a 14-0 lead.
Northampton was unable to establish a running game while the Chicopee secondary did a good job foiling the passing game.
Chicopee (4-5) had two interceptions to end promising Northampton drives. The Blue Devils had their only turnover when DeJesus came up with his interception.
“Our coaches teach us to react to the ball and that’s what I did,” DeJesus said.
Chicopee struck first, scoring with 3:02 remaining in the first half. Conover connected with Rodney Vazquez on a 36-yard touchdown pass and after Ricky Elmer kicked the extra point, the Pacers led 7-0.
The touchdown drive was set up by a Conover interception. The Blue Devils marched to the Pacers 5-yard line, but Conover’s theft ended their hopes of scoring first.
“This was a frustrating loss,” DeJesus said.
