HADLEY — Junior Marykate Farnham broke away and fired home the game-winner late in the second overtime period to give the Hopkins Academy girls soccer a 2-1 victory over Smith Vocational, Saturday in the Western Massachusetts Division 4Tournament.

“I saw composure,” Hopkins coach Lyndsay Roberts said. “After coming so close so many times in this game, we were just missing a little high, to have the composure to make the plays we needed to make to win it is awesome.”

The seventh-seeded Golden Hawks (10-7-2) will visit No. 2 Gateway Regional (11-2-3), Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the quarterfinal round.

No. 10 Smith Vocational finished 9-9.

Hopkins hit the crossbar with three shots in overtime and double OT before Farnham finally buried the winner.

“It shows how close we were coming,” Roberts said.

Hopkins goalkeeper Gabby Palmisano surrendered the first goal of the game in the 10th minute to Marissa Mayhew. However, Palmisano was brilliant the rest of the game, shutting out the Vikings’ offense for the next 70 minutes of regulation, a 10-minute sudden-death overtime, and the better part of another 10-minute overtime.

“It’s extremely rewarding,” Roberts said.

Hopkins was a Palmisano save away from losing in sudden death.

The tying goal came in the 22nd minute off the foot of junior Samantha Jenks.

Palmisano finished with seven saves, while Juliette Cook had an assist.

Ella Sherman had an assist for the Vikings while Lizzy Hardy made 20 saves.
