BELCHERTOWN — Once the rain subsided the night sky came out, the lights came on, and the top-seeded Belchertown boys soccer team defeated No. 8 Athol, 5-1, Monday in the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Tournament quarterfinals.

Field conditions played a factor the entire game. With players struggling to gain footing it was hard for either team to maintain possession.

Evan Fournier opened the scoring for the Orioles with a kick from the left corner that sailed over Athol goalkeeper Jordan Carrasquillo’s head to make it 1-0.

“This fields been like this for a week or two,” Fournier said. “We’ve played a couple games on it so every time I try to stay confident plating my feet, you learn to deal with it.”

With 14 minutes, 15 seconds remaining in the first half, Max Caron was subbed into the game during an Orioles attack. Trying to put the ball on net, Daniel Becker rifled one off Carrasquillo’s chest that bounced to the foot of Caron, who quickly shot a dribbler into the net.

With a little over six minutes left in the half, Bryce King scored to cut Athol’s deficit to 2-1.

The momentum did not last long as Cyrus Raines fed Michael Laughner for Belchertown’s third goal.

Despite three goals in the first half, Belchertown’s offense missed a considerable amount of shots. Shortly after his goal, Laughner missed a sliding kick off a pass from Caron.

“We’re still missing some things offensively, overall I think we played a good game,” Belchertown coach Tony Almeida said. “Going forward we have to do better but I think our offense is clicking. We just have to sharpen up a few things and see what happens.”

Athol had several good chances as the second half played out, but Belchertown goalkeeper Sean McCarthy stood tall. Five minutes into the second half, Athol’s Hayden Herk was denied a breakaway by a McCarthy dive.

With 20 minutes left in regulation, Athol was attempting to press the Orioles, leaving its side of the field open.

Sean O’Neill scored an unassisted goal for Belchertown and Nathaniel Schiffer scored the fifth tally to end Athol’s playoff hopes.

The Orioles (15-2-2) will play No. 4 Mount Greylock (11-4-2) in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Szot Park in Chicopee.

“Next game we have to go in hungry,” Fournier said. “We know we aren’t the superior team to them, we have to go in and prove it, play our hardest, and hopefully get the W.”
