Three youth football teams took home some Super Bowl championships over the weekend in the Suburban Amateur Football League.
The Amherst Pee-Wee (8-9 year old) team, coached by Mike Isabelle, beat Palmer 22-0 to claim its second straight championship.
“I just want them to have knowledge of the game,” Isabelle said. “As great as it is to win, I just want them to love the sport.”
Kordell London led Amherst with two rushing touchdowns, while David Teixeira also found the end zone. Frederick Alfaro-Lieve scored on a two-point conversion for Amherst.
Amherst leaned on defense during the season, led by defensive lineman Liam Worgess and Ceejay April.
April and Worgess rotated from the interior and end positions to create disruption for opposing offenses.
Travis Isabelle, the team’s quarterback, improved all year and had a 51-yard touchdown throw during the season.
The Easthampton junior team (10-11), coached by Tom Hogan, beat Franklin County 28-24 in a back-and-forth contest.
“All the kids came to every practice and worked hard every night even in the rain or cold,” Hogan said. “The whole Easthampton football and cheerleading program supported this team.”
Colin Larson scored three rushing touchdowns and had a 60-yard reception for a score.
William Hogan, the quarterback, added a two-point conversion and threw for over 100 yards against Franklin County.
Jack Dawson, an outside linebacker for Easthampton, played the rush and pressured the quarterback effectively all season.
Dawson contributed a two-point conversion as well.
Sean Halpin, the team’s center, did not miss a snap the entire season. Halpin provided leadership for the entire offensive line. Halpin and Larson did not fumble a snap the entire season.
The undersized Easthampton team played against bigger teams all year on its was to the championship.
Matthew Counter and Evan O’Malley provided a steady presence along the defensive line for Easthampton.
The South Hadley senior team (12-13), coached by Pat Sabbs, also took a home a Super Bowl championship.
