NORTHAMPTON — High winds are supposed to drop off by this evening, giving way to a calm week ahead.
The National Weather Service had posted a wind advisory for the region, indicating that some power outages and wind-related damage could be expected Sunday, but by 3:12 p.m., the National Grid’s outage map showed that none of its 31,249 customers in Hampshire County were experiencing outages. The Eversource map showed 301 customer outages in Hampshire County at about 3:30 p.m.
“This is a little bit more — the wind and direction, that is — what the trees are used to. That’s our theory anyway,” said Bill Simpson, a National Weather Service spokesman, who said that tree damage is expected to be “pretty minimal.”
The northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph, with gusts of up to 40 mph, had not caused any wind-related damage or power outages in Northampton, police said.
National Weather Service severe weather spotter Dave Hayes, whose Facebook page, Dave Hayes The Weather Nut, chronicles daily weather happenings in the Pioneer Valley, wrote on Sunday morning that gusts in areas of high terrain could reach up to 50 mph, and in the Valley, up to 40 mph.
Hayes also noted that Sunday evening would be breezy, but that the rest of the week, including Thanksgiving, should be cool and calm.
