Emma McCarthy scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and the Amherst College women’s basketball team won a heavyweight fight 41-36 against Trine in Las Vegas on Friday.

Both teams entered the game unbeaten and ranked in the top six of the D3hoops.com and coaches polls. Only the Mammoths (9-0) left with a zero in the loss column.

They fought back from a 24-19 halftime deficit, holding Trine to single-digit scoring totals in the third and fourth quarters.

Hannah Fox added 10 points for Amherst.

Neither team shot better than 30 percent from the field. Both are ranked in the top five nationally in scoring defense.

Amherst has won 42 straight games.

Smith 59, Baruch 32 — Kennedy Guest-Pritchett led a balanced Pioneers attack with 12 points and 11 rebounds in a road win.

Eleven players scored for Smith (8-2), which had 17 assists. Emma Seymour led the Pioneers with four assists.

Smith’s defense held Baruch to 22 percent shooting and scored 13 points off turnovers.
