NORTHAMPTON — Snow that started overnight and continued into the morning resulted in school and other closures across Hampshire County Wednesday, but few accidents as of late morning.
Meteorologist Matt Doody of the National Weather Service office in Taunton said light to moderate snow will continue into the afternoon, probably petering out into flurries and stopping by 5 p.m.
Schools across Hampshire County were closed as a result of the snow Wednesday morning, including those in Northampton, Easthampton, Belchertown, Amherst, Pelham, Hadley, and South Hadley.
Forbes Library in Northampton is also closed. Easthampton Police reported that Mountain Road is closed, although the police announcement notes that The Log Cabin and Tavern On The Hill businesses located off Mountain Road are still be open for business.
Police departments in Easthampton, Northampton, Amherst, Hadley, South Hadley, Belchertown and Granby all reported no early morning accidents. Hadley police did report two accidents the night before that appeared to be related to the snow.
At 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, a motor vehicle crashed into a PVTA bus-stop enclosure behind Advanced Auto Parts on Russell Street, damaging the structure, police said. Nobody was waiting for a bus at the time and nobody was injured. The accident is under investigation, according to the department’s Facebook page.
Another accident reported by Hadley police occurred earlier in the evening, when a driver lost control of her vehicle on Hockanum Road and crashed into a tree. The driver was the only occupant in the car. Police had to use the Jaws of Life to free her, and she was transported to Baystate Medical Center with injuries that did not appear to be life threatening, police said.
State Police reported an accident in Hatfield that occurred Wednesday around 7:30 a.m., but said that it was due to operator error, not the weather.
