Northampton diver Jordyn Vandergrift slipped starting her reverse 1½ tuck, one of the six dives on her program Tuesday.
She couldn’t generate enough lift to complete the rotation, and landed ponytail-first in the JFK Middle School pool.
Vandergrift shrugged off that miss and nailed her front double, one of the higher degrees of difficulty she attempts.
“Her higher DD dives were the best she’s ever done,” Northampton diving coach Lou Ann Bierwert said.
Without much practice in recent weeks because of meet rescheduling, Vandergrift is refining her dives on the fly.
“I’m trying to nail down consistency,” she said. “I want to add higher degrees of difficulty for higher scores at Western Mass. and states.”
Vandergrift placed fifth at the sectional championships last season and entered this week ranked second in the Pioneer Valley in average score this season.
“It’s about having the right thoughts,” she said. “Positive thoughts, positive outcome.”
Vandergrift’s slip did little to effect her final score during the Blue Devils’ meet against Belchertown, Tuesday. She won the event with a score of 235.2. It was just over a point shy of her 236.39 average.
“It’s always good to practice the meet in your head because it makes you dive better,” Bierwert said.
Belchertown won the meet, 95-82.
The Orioles prevailed with depth, as they only won three individual events. Brooke Podsiadlo captured the 200-yard freestyle (2 minutes, 8.19 seconds), Nicole Beaumont won the 100 backstroke (1:08.45) and Wiktoria Kaczor was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.73).
Ruby Gottlieb won the 100 butterfly (1:02.27) and 200 individual medley (2:21.73) for Northampton, while Abbie Murphy was first in the 50 freestyle (26.81) and 500 freestyle (5:37.97).
On the boys side, Belchertown swam away 109-59.
Nathan Dragon and Ben LaClair led the way with two individual wins each.
Dragon finished first in the 200 freestyle (1:58.01) and 500 freestyle (5:19.43), while LaClair won the 200 IM (2:02.28) and 100 freestyle (48.1). His 100 time set a pool record.
Nick Whitcomb took first in the 100 butterfly (54.74) and 100 backstroke (54.01) for Northampton.
