Resistance and symbolic gestures can be empowering when there is no better alternative available.
But for Democrats in 2018, there is a better alternative available, and feasible — winning the House, which would put them in a position to concretely undermine any Republican agenda, whether it is Donald Trump or Mike Pence who is president.
Winning the House will require, on a door-to-door basis, explaining why someone who might have recently received a tax decrease would be better off voting for a Democrat.
Any political activity that does not promote success in that effort is idle, if not self-indulgent. In other words, the theme for Democrats this year should be overcoming, not mere resistance.
