NORTHAMPTON — The Northampton boys and girls indoor track teams swept both Chicopee Comp and Agawam in Friday’s PVIAC late session meet at Smith College.

On the boys side, Benjamin Gordon Sniffen claimed first place in the mile with a time of 4 minute, 45.6 seconds. It was a tight race until the last lap, when Gordon Sniffen caught a second wind and gained a sizable lead to finish the race more than two seconds ahead of the competition.

In the 600, Northampton occupied the top two positions, with Cole Lavalle (1:29.89) and Christian Hodgson (1:30.24) placing first and second, respectively. Lavalle held the lead the entire race, whereas Hodgson flew past his opponents in the home stretch to secure second place.

Angel Mendez clinched second place in the 300 with a time of 39.09. Tucker Quinlan posted a 5-foot, 3-inch high jump that resulted in another second place finish for the Blue Devils.

Nick Peterson won the 2-mile (10:09.91) with teammate Johnathan Dean right behind in second (10:31.61) for Hamp. Ethan Cooper won the 1,000 (2:42.34).

On the girls side, Mary Yount led the way with two long distance runs. She got second place in the 2-mile (12:01.63), and finished only behind her teammate, Rosie Ingmann (5:33.38), in the mile (5:39.13).

“It was not exactly my strongest (performance),” Yount said. “I wanted to get first, but that’s OK. I’ve been feeling tired this past week.”

Hazel Ethier won the long jump (16-1) for Northampton.

Maggie Reade finished second in the 600 in 1:50.08. The Blue Devils’ 4×200 relay team also took second with a time of 1:51.31.

The meet concluded the regular season. The PVIAC championships will be held Friday at Smith College.

“This next week we are going to take it easy, and that’s going to help. I am hoping to PR,” Yount said.
