AMHERST — It was only fitting that on the Belchertown boys hockey team’s senior day at the Mullins Center’s main rink, that senior captain Nate Pacheco scored two goals, one of which was assisted by his brother Matt, a freshman.

The goals were Nate Pacheco’s eighth and ninth of the season and came during a 3-2 victory over Amherst Regional, Saturday.

Nate and Matt are first and second, respectively, on the team in assists, and third and second in goals.

“We always know where each other are,” Nate Pacheco said on his chemistry with his brother. “Sometimes I can just pass it without looking and I know he’s going to be there.”

Both of Nate Pacheco’s goals came in the second period and gave Belchertown (5-4-4) a 2-0 lead.

Amherst sophomore Brandon Peritz pulled one back as he scored off an assist from Koji Ishida and Jarrett Tripp, making the score 2-1 at the second intermission.

Early in the third, Belchertown’s leading scorer Vaughn Gillen netted his 13th goal of the season to extend the Orioles’ lead to 3-1 and give Matt Pacheco his second assist of the game.

Amherst (4-6-4) cut the lead to one goal with 10 minutes left when Ishida, from behind the goal, tapped the puck toward the front of the net where it was somehow deflected between goalie Ethan Rajpold’s legs and drifted into the goal. It was a fast sequence of events that Belchertown coach Matt Crutch was confused about.

“It hit a stick, I’m not sure if it was (Rajpold’s) own stick or our stick, their stick. I’m really not exactly sure what happened,” Crutch said. “It just took an unfortunate bounce for us. Luckily we were able to put ourselves in a good position to have a two-goal cushion.”

Rajpold finished with 23 saves, including 11 in the second period.

In the final minute of the game, Amherst pulled its goalie and put three shots on goal, but Rajpold did not let any through.

“It’s a game of bounces,” Amherst coach Mike Rousseau said. “I thought we had a last minute surge at the end where we played pretty well. We were up against a very well-coached Belchertown team, and sometimes the urgency wasn’t there, but I can’t fault our effort.”

Amherst goalie Johnathan Hanscom finished with 14 saves. The Hurricanes peppered Rajpold with 26 shots.

Belchertown will travel to Greenfield, Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Amherst will play Minnechaug, Tuesday at 8:30 p.m.
