SOUTHAMPTON — A water main break near College Highway in Southampton halted water access to businesses in the area on Wednesday.
The water main break, which took place in the parking lot of the Red Rocks Plaza at 15 College Highway across from the Big Y grocery store, caused flooding in the lot and across the road.
“As far as I know, traffic in the area was not affected,” Southampton Fire Chief John Workman said.
Businesses in the plaza were without water for most of the day. Repairs were finished by about 2:45 p.m., said Joanne Sardella, manager of Salon Advantages in the affected plaza.
“A lot of my workers came in earlier this morning and realized that we had no water,” Sardella said. “We couldn’t do any hair coloring without water, so we were shut down for about half a day until we opened again.”
As to what caused the water main break, Workman said that he was not entirely sure.
“These problems happen in the winter,” Workman said. “The ground tends to shift when it freezes. When it thaws out, problems like breaks in water mains show themselves.”
The Southampton Water Department could not be reached for comment.
