Objects to decision on Hatfield town jobs

I hope that Hatfield residents carefully read the article about the Select Board’s decision not to allow the voters to elect a new treasurer and collector (“Town election won’t feature treasurer post,” March 2 ) at the May election.

After two failed attempts by the Select Board at Town Meeting to take away our right to vote for these offices, it made a 26-month appointment of a retired former assistant treasurer. Forget about democracy, Town Meeting, elections, and will-of-the people in Hatfield: We get our leaders hiding behind their paid staff who say this is the best course of action.

This is nonsense, of course, and I hope that the town clerk realizes that there must be write-in ballot space for these two offices even though she and the Select Board have already shut out candidates through the normal channel of nomination papers.
