EASTHAMPTON — A Tuesday night crash closed a portion of Union Street and left some customers in the area without power.

The street shut down between Liberty and Cottage street after the accident, and reopened at about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to Easthampton Police.

Easthampton Police Public Information Officer Chad Alexander said that an SUV crashed into a telephone pole on Union Street at around 10:38 p.m. The man driving the vehicle was taken to the hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening, Alexander said. Police said that the driver told them that he hit a pothole, which caused him to lose control of the vehicle.

Alexander said that the impact of the crash knocked down the bottom half of the pole, with the shear occurring about 7 or 8 feet up. However, the wires caused the rest of the pole to stay suspended in place.

“It was something,” said Alexander.

The area was shut down immediately. Because of this, power was not interrupted by the accident itself, although 14 customers in the immediate area had their power shut off by Eversource during the replacement of the pole.
