DEERFIELD — Kelvin Torres, 40, of South Deerfield has been charged with two counts of assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest after a car chase.
Torres was also arrested on charges of failing to stop for a police officer, negligent operation of a vehicle and driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to Deerfield Police Officer Adam Sokoloski, Torres was traveling at 48 mph in a 35-mph speed zone and was stopped by Sokoloski and given a warning for a broken window and a speeding citation, which Torres said he would fight in court. Torres then sped off from that intersection, cutting off an oncoming car that had to slam on its brakes to avoid a collision.
Sokoloski followed Torres again, who allegedly sped up when Sokoloski tried to stop his a second time. Sokoloski called for assistance, and Sunderland Police Officer Cody Wells assisted. Torres was stopped and, when placed under arrest, swore and punched Sokoloski, police said. He then allegedly hit Wells in the face, breaking his eyeglasses.
Two more officers arrived to help with the arrest. The criminal complaint noted that Torres smelled of alcohol and that three open containers of beer were found inside Torres’ vehicle.
Torres was released on $5,000 bail on conditions that he not drive, that he remain sober and complete a driver’s training program, and undergo other counseling as directed by probation.
