Argues for omitting citizenship question

I respond to the letter urging us to put accurate national census above partisanship (“Put accurate national census above politics,” April 11.)

The question on citizenship was proposed by the Republican-led Department of Justice, and would be implemented by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, also a Republican. It appears to be a fairly partisan effort.

Four previous Census Bureau directors, who have served under both Republican and Democratic administrations, have expressed their concerns that such an addition would ultimately lead to worse data. Underfunding compounds the problem.

The writer’s partisan reaction notwithstanding, a better count would almost certainly be achieved by omitting the question.
