Cites people’s kindness

A life of construction work had left me with double full-knee replacement surgery as the only option if I ever wanted to walk the beach again.

The road through recovery is long and winding, full of pain and the anxiety of taking medication for it, the tedium of exercise, elevation and ice, dealing with everyday acts as challenges.

Peeking through this daily grind, however, is the dawn of a fundamental realization: we are basically kind. Almost all people open and hold the door. Young people move obstacles out of the way. Tall people help with things beyond my grasp.

We all feel good helping others. It took knocking me out of my groove to show my recently acquired cynicism is unfounded.

On the world stage, events play out with little or no input from me. Here at ground level, I can help. Yes, thank you, I’m feeling better.
