NORTHAMPTON — A Wednesday evening attic fire at 25 Hinckley St. has left no major damage, according to the Northampton Fire Department.

The department received a call about the at 10:57 p.m.

The fire was determined to be in the material under the roof, but crews had difficulty accessing it because there were solar panels on the roof, Deputy Chief Tim McQueston.

While firefighters normally cut through the top of a roof to access such fires, the panels meant that they had to attack it from underneath.

The fire was brought under control at 11:24 p.m.

Although the occupants spent the night in a hotel, they returned to the house the next day.

They were initially alerted about the fire by smoke detector, McQueston said.

The fire department said that the fire resulted in only minor roof damage.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but it is not regarded as suspicious.
