Heartened by columnist’s approach on polarization

Never did I imagine that I’d possibly find myself in even partial agreement with Jay Fleitman, so his column of June 5 (“Uncertain path away from polarization”) came as a surprise and, I admit, something of a challenge.

I didn’t expect the sober and somewhat sad tone in which he decries the crude level of political debate on both sides in our deplorable culture war. I was heartened to see him include himself among those incapable of an impartial view. And I was further heartened to see him admit that he can’t prescribe a way out of the problem.

Perhaps with this column, doctor, you’ve taken the first step.
