SHUTESBURY — A fire destroyed a home and claimed the lives of one dog Sunday night.

At 7:22 p.m., the Shutesbury Fire Department got a call for smoke showing at 56 Wendell Road. When firefighters arrived, they found the top floor of the house in flames, said Greenfield Fire Chief Robert Strahan.

No people were hurt, but one of the family’s dogs perished in the fire. The family’s second dog was found alive in the basement during a third search of the house. One firefighter was taken to a hospital for a non-life-threatening condition related to the extreme heat and humidity, Strahan said.

As of 9:20 p.m., the fire was not yet totally under control, Strahan said, and added that it would likely take a few more hours to completely put out the flames.

Mutual aid was provided by fire departments from Greenfield, Leverett, Montague, New Salem, Deerfield, Amherst, Wendell, Turners Falls, Erving and Northampton.

Editor’s note: This story originally reported two dogs died in the fire. Only one dog died, the other was found alive after publication.
