PELHAM — A car crashed into a utility pole on Amherst Road early Saturday morning, and although the driver fled the scene police were able to identify him because the bumper and license plate from his vehicle were left behind.
That’s according to a post on the Pelham Police Department’s Facebook page, which says that the call came into the Massachusetts State Police on Saturday at around 4 a.m. State and Amherst police responded to the scene, the post says.
“It was determined that a motor vehicle had hit the pole and fled the crash scene, leaving behind his bumper and license plate,” the post reads. “Amherst PD was able to track down the vehicle and operator a short time later, and that individual was subsequently arrested.”
Sanford Keedy, 58, of 79 Tracy Circle, Amherst, was arrested at the intersection of Main and North East streets on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, his fourth offense, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle to endanger, said Amherst Detective Sgt. Brian Daly.
According to logs supplied by Amherst Police, the vehicle, which had substantial front-end damage, was stopped in the middle of the intersection at the time Keedy was placed under arrest.
Pelham police said in their statement that Western Massachusetts Electric Co. crews were able to replace the damaged pole quickly.
