I compliment Joe Gannon on his excellent column in Saturday’s Gazette (“Abolish ICE? Trump wins in 2020.”)
I am a lifelong liberal, but since the last election I have been consistently frustrated by the actions of the Democratic Party and its supporters. Since the election in 2016 too many Democrats have indulged in the sort of nonstop whining displayed by a youth team that lost “the big game.”
The losing team complains about the referees, the wind, the weather and anything to explain their undeserved loss. Hopefully, kids like this have a good coach who inspires them to look forward, train harder and develop a winning strategy for the next “big game.”
So, how about us adults? Some simple facts: the Democrats lost the election, Donald Trump is president and Congress is controlled by the Republicans. As a result we are seeing unpleasant changes which I detest, and more will be coming.
What can be done? What value is raising money to block Brett Kavanaugh from the Supreme Court? Of course I support due diligence in exploring his background, but, unless we discover he has committed a crime, conservative opinions do not make him unqualified.
Given the current minority position of this Democratic Party, the incessant complaining just underscores its lack of political power and probably won’t change the outcome. Enough of this “poor sportsmanship whining.”
It seems to be time for the Democratic Party to start developing a clear idea of what it is for and not stay mired on focusing on what it is against. Of course that assumes we want to change the political landscape.
I yearn for that great kids’ coach who gets the team moving forward and inspires positive constructive actions so we win the next “big game.”
