HANOVER, Mass. — A Massachusetts police officer killed while investigating a car crash has been remembered at his funeral as a family man, a fervent New England Patriots fan, and a “hero.”

Joseph Comperchio, the brother-in-law of Weymouth Sgt. Michael Chesna, delivered the eulogy Friday at St. Mary of the Sacred Heart in Hanover.

Comperchio said Chesna has “helped countless people as a police officer.”

Chesna was killed Sunday by a man who police say threw a rock at the officer and repeatedly shot him with his own weapon. The suspect also is charged with killing a 77-year-old bystander, Vera Adams.

While friends, family and dignitaries packed the church, thousands of officers from across the country stood outside.

Chesna, a 42-year-old U.S. Army veteran, leaves behind a wife and two children.
