HADLEY — A Ludlow man who was operating a boat that crashed on the Connecticut River last week has died, according to a spokeswoman for the state’s Executive Office of Energy Environmental Affairs.

Corey Cabrera, 32, died from his injuries Saturday, three days after the crash, Katie Gronendyke wrote in an email Tuesday.

Cabrera and two passengers, a 33-year-old Ludlow man and a 28-year-old Springfield woman, were all brought to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield following the crash into the shore across from Rainbow Beach on July 25 at around 5:15 p.m. Upon arrival, Hadley first responders found one of the occupants of the boat unresponsive, but breathing. The passengers were treated and released from the hospital that night, Gronendyke said.

Gronendyke said the boat did not belong to Cabrera.

“Cabrera had been using a relative’s boat without permission,” Gronendyke said.

Environmental Police are handing the investigation along with state police and Hadley police.

Four boats assisted with the rescue from the Hadley, Northampton and South Hadley fire departments. The owner of Sportsman’s Marina in Hadley, Gary Pelissier, also allowed first responders to borrow his boat to assist with the rescue.
