AMHERST — The father of an undergraduate student at the University of Massachusetts says his son was beaten at an off-campus party last weekend, leaving him with serious injuries.

Richard Kropas, of Weymouth, said several people physically assaulted his son Christopher, a junior at the university, late Saturday evening at the Townehouse Apartments at 50 Meadow St. The attack left Christopher with significant wounds to his eyes, two lacerations on his face, a broken nose and a concussion, according to Kropas.

“I’m livid,” Kropas said. “All I want is for him to be able to go back safely.”

Kropas said his son was at a party with friends living in his old apartment, and that another group of university students were told to leave the party later in the evening. Suddenly, Kropas said, his son was attacked, and allegedly hit with some kind of bat. The problem, Kropas added, is that nobody knows exactly who the attackers were.

“There’s nobody that can identify anybody by name,” Kropas said, adding that there is no video of the beating.

Kropas’ son declined to comment for this story.

Amherst police confirmed that an “assault” on one victim took place at apartment #23 of the Townehouse complex early Sunday, but have no suspects.

Police are still investigating the incident, and declined to give any more information other than they are collecting witness testimony. No charges had been filed as of Wednesday.

UMass Amherst spokeswoman Mary Dettloff said the university is aware of the incident and is cooperating with the Amherst Police Department’s investigation.

The Dean of Students office has been in touch with the victim’s family, Dettloff said, which Kropas confirmed.
