SOUTHAMPTON – A school bus filled with students started to smoke Friday morning, police said.
Police said a possible school bus fire was reported at 8:22 a.m. on County Road near Freyer Road. There was no fire showing when officials arrived on the scene, but there was a strong burning brake odor and the bus driver said “one point there was a lot of smoke in the bus,” according to police.
The Southampton Fire Department used a thermal imager and found the right rear wheel was extremely warm, police said, and a mechanic from the bus company was called come out to assess the problem.
All the students, who were headed to William E. Norris Elementary School, were evacuated from the bus and were standing down the road and were found in good spirits, police said. The Norris Elementary principal came to the scene to check on the students, police said. No students were injured, and they all made it to school on another bus.
