NORTHAMPTON — Devontay Edmonds took the opening kickoff for Northampton, bounced off a couple of defenders and appeared to have a clear path to the end zone.

But Smith Vocational’s Ethan Rivera hustled and caught Edmonds on the 7-yard line.

Braeden Tudryn punched it in from there for the first of three opening quarter touchdowns that carried Northampton to a 42-6 triumph over the Vikings, Friday night.

Tudryn is off to an impressive start for the Blue Devils. After rushing for 135 yards a week ago against Amherst, the sophomore running back via Hopkins Academy scored touchdowns the first three times he carried the football.

Tudryn ran only six times for 37 yards in addition to having a long scoring run negated due to a penalty.

“Hard to believe he’s only a sophomore,” Northampton coach Joe Kocot said. “He ran hard.”

Young teams are prone to mistakes and the Vikings, who have 18 freshmen, had their share of them. The more experienced Blue Devils capitalized on them after starting drives on the 7, 38, 15, 40, 15, 4, 27 and 26.

“We had some crazy stuff happen,” Kocot said. “We executed well.”

Penalties stalled Smith Vocational (0-2) drives before they could develop. Turnovers turned into points and it was all downhill for the Vikings.

Northampton got a quick spark when Edmonds had that 53-yard kickoff return that ended 7 yards shy of the goal line thanks to tackle by Rivera.

“That was good hustle and he’s a player our freshmen can look up to,” Smith Vocational coach Vinnie Guiel said.

It set the tone for the game. Northampton (2-0) had short drives of 7 and 38 yards during the opening quarter that enabled the Blue Devils to grab a 16-0 advantage.

Brett Holden capped a two-play, 15-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown run following a turnover.

Then, in a matter of 11 seconds, that margin expanded to 22-0 following Lennie Brown’s 20-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Tudryn had a big second quarter. His pair of 20-yard touchdown runs less than two minutes apart gave the Blue Devils a 35-0 lead.

The Blue Devils weren’t done. Another costly mistake gave Northampton a first down on the Smith Voke 4-yard line.

Northampton was outstanding on defense. The front line clogged the middle and stifled Smith Voke’s running game.

Tom Jacques didn’t get a chance to showcase his arm. With the score being one-sided, Northampton mostly kept the ball on the ground.

Another short drive after a turnover enabled Northampton to take a 42-0 lead on Edmonds’ 5-yard run.

Smith Voke used a big play to get on the board. Nick Marcinowski hit Ethan Pearce with a 66-yard scoring strike to make it 42-6 midway through the third quarter.

“We’ve been working on that play in practice and this time, it worked,” Guiel said. “Coming into this game, we knew we’d need to play lights out to win.”
