The UMass hockey team knocked off No. 1-ranked Ohio State, 6-3, Friday night in Columbus, Ohio.

The Minutemen jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period. The Buckeyes pulled within 3-2, but a Phillip Lagunov goal gave UMass some separation at 4-2 with 11 minutes, 43 seconds left in the third.

Bobby Trivignoโ€™s second goal extended the lead back to two at 5-3 with 4:17 remaining.

Cale Makar sealed the win with an empty-net tally.

Brett Boeing put UMass on the board with 9:20 left in the first. Amherst native John Leonard made it 2-0 with a power-play goal about four minutes later.

Trivignoโ€™s first gave the Minutemen a 3-0 lead midway through the second.

UMass (3-0) and Ohio State (2-1) play again at 5 p.m. Saturday.

The last time UMass beat the No. 1 team in the country was Feb. 10, 2012 when it beat Boston University 3-2.

Field hockey

UMass 5, Northeastern 4 (2OT) โ€” The Minutewomen (8-9) overcame a 4-0 deficit in the second half to pull out a win in Dedham.

Antonet Louw scored all five goals for the Minutewomen, including two in an exactly one-minute span.

The game-winning tally came in the 89th minute. On a UMass penalty corner, Lucy Cooper inserted to Sophie de Jonge, who left the ball to Louw for a shot that went into the top-right corner to end the match.

Megan Davis made seventh saves in the final 45 minutes for the win. Johanna von dem Borne made six stops in the start.

Womenโ€™s volleyball

Amherst 3, Wellesley 0 โ€” Charlotte Duran had 15 assists, Jamie Dailey eight kills and Skyleur Savage 10 digs as the Mammoths (15-4) won at home in their 27th annual Hall of Fame Invitational tournament opener.

Menโ€™s soccer

Amherst 3, Wesleyan 0 โ€” Jimmy McMillian, Bryce Johnson and Cutler Coleman each scored for the Mammoths (9-3-1, 5-3-1 NESCAC).
