Northampton native Emily Biggs scored in the 84th minute to send the Smith College field hockey team to the NEWMAC championship game.
The third-seeded Pioneers beat No. 2 Springfield College 2-1 on Thursday in Springfield. Smith will host fifth-seeded MIT in the conference title game Saturday at 1 p.m. The Engineers knocked out top-seeded Babson 2-1.
It was the second straight overtime playoff game for Smith (12-7), which beat Mount Holyoke in the quarterfinals. The unassisted goal was Biggs’ second of the season.
Neva Richardson tied the game for Smith in the 64th minute, eight minutes after Kyra Ashe put the Pride up 1-0.
Smith outshot Springfield 29-3. Deerfield’s Anna Ballou put three shots on goal.
Channy Cornell made two saves.
