A note to John Paradis

John, I wanted to say 1) Thank you for your service and 2) Thank you for a great article (“What it means to serve — and to ‘embrace the suck,’ ” Nov. 9).

I grew up in a military/government family. I was born in Haiti. I moved every two years. I have a brother who went onto serve in the Navy. Retiring at age 50 as a Navy Seal Commander.

Military, although I believe is exceptional, is not for the faint of heart.

You articulated quite well what it means to serve, and I wanted to commend you.
