NORTHAMPTON – The first snowfall of the season has hit Western Massachusetts.

National Weather Service snow totals are still being collected, but around 10 p.m. Thursday five inches of snow were measured in South Hadley, and 7.8 inches were measured in Springfield in the early hours Friday.

Many schools across the county delayed their start time Friday morning, and some towns have issued parking bans.

“Unfortunately you guys are going to see a little bit more snow over the next few hours,” said Lenore Correia, National Weather Service Boston/Norton meteorologist. “It will be pretty quick but it could drop an inch, maybe a few inches. It should be out of the area by noon.”

This weekend, temperatures in Western Massachusetts will hover around the upper 30s during the day and dip down to the 20s in the evenings. It’s possible the area will get a bit of snow on Sunday evening into Monday morning, but much less than Thursday night and Friday morning’s storm, Correia said.
