NORTHAMPTON – Smith College campus police and Northampton Police responded to possible shots fired on the quad Thursday, Smith College reported on Twitter at 9:39 p.m. The tweet instructed students to not go outside.
At 10 p.m., Smith College reported on Twitter that police found “nothing of concern” in their search and the area was all clear.

PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT: ALL CLEAR. Campus Police and Northampton Police have performed a thorough search of the area and nothing of concern was found. No further activity reported. Officers will remain in the area throughout the evening.

Northampton Police said that a single caller in a dorm room contacted college police. The call was received at 8:55 p.m., according to Smith College. The caller said they thought they heard gunshots, but nothing else seemed out of the ordinary and that people were outside walking around.
Afterwards, officers monitored the area and reported no additional activity. The cause of the sound is unknown, Smith College said.
