Bella Earle rose to the occasion.
When point guard Mia Kelly fouled out with two minutes remaining in a close game, the situation appeared dire for the South Hadley girls basketball team against Chicopee on Monday. But Earle scored 10 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, as the Tigers won 55-53.
She made two free throws with 28 seconds to break a tie. Chicopee missed a potential winning shot at the buzzer. Earle also took three charges in the game.
Kelly finished with 15 points before fouling out.
South Hadley (1-0) struggled to shoot in the first half and trailed 27-13. They settled into the second half, scoring 20 in the third quarter and 22 in the fourth
Northampton 51, Ludlow 18 โ Amanda Mieczkowski amassed 15 points and 10 assists, as the Blue Devils won back-to-back games to start the season. Emily Sledzieski (nine points) and Riley Allen (six points) made two 3-pointerโs each. Caroline Tanner scored eight for the Blue Devils (2-0), who outscored Ludlow 25-3 in the third quarter.
Gateway Regional 36, Westfield Tech 17 โ Lily Waters scored 11 points, as the Gators clamped down on the road. Becca Herman added eight for Gateway (1-0, 1-0 Tri-County South).
Hopkins Academy 59, South Hadley 48 โ Freshman Andrew Ciaglo hit a 3-pointer and went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line as the Golden Hawks outscored the Tigers 14-5 in the fourth quarter to win on the road.
Ciaglo finished with a game- and career-high 23 points.
Braeden Tudryn had 14 points and Caleb Graves added 11 for Hopkins (1-1), which gave first-year coach Adam Ginsburg his first win.
Hunter Carey led the Tigers (0-3) with 18 points. Brady Marion added 11.
South Hadley visits Sabis on Tuesday and hosts Mount Greylock on Thursday. That will complete a stretch of five games in seven days.
Brattleboro Union 53, Amherst Regional 43 โ Akeme Hilson-Mallory and Isa Mahal Castro McCauley scored 12 points each, as the Hurricanes opened the season with a loss. Castro McCauley was making his varsity debut.
J.B. Mills added eight points and 10 rebounds for the Hurricanes (0-1). Amherst led 21-16 at halftime, but its big men got into foul trouble. Brattleboro shot 31 free throws compared to 17 for Amherst.
Easthampton 7, Mount Everett 1 โ Easthampton bounced back from its season-opening loss to Amherst to rout Mount Everett in Sheffield.
A four-goal third period put the game out of reach.
Garren Fugiel scored twice, while Jake Batchelder (assist), Jake Delisle, Mike McColgan (assist), Christopher Tenczar and Jacob Voudren each had one goal.
Tenczar assisted on three goals, with Cole Growhoski and Fugiel helping on a pair each.
Ely Boyle and Matt Sullivan had an assist apiece. Tyler Cortis earned the win in goal.
