I completely agree with Rutherford Platt’s letter to the editor regarding passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) until he gets to his last paragraph where he blames today’s Republicans in the White House and Congress for the current dysfunction in Washington.
As he so aptly points out earlier in the letter, ADA resulted from Bob Dole and Ted Kennedy working together. Bipartisanship requires effort on the part of both of the majority parties to work. Perhaps Mr. Platt missed the recent acrimony by Democratic senators during the Judiciary Committee hearings on a Supreme Court nomination as an example of Democratic intransigence.
Interestingly, the same issue exists right here in Northampton as represented by recent letters to the editor regarding the cancellation of Jody Kasper’s planned training trip to Israel. Where was the bipartisan discussion that allowed the righteous objections of avowed do-gooders to carry the day which resulted in the cancellation of the trip?
