It took three quarters for the Hopkins Academy and Ware girls basketball teams to shake out of their New Year’s funk.

The teams exploded for a combined 45 points in the fourth as the Golden Hawks outlasted the Indians, 54-46, in Ware.

Samantha Jenks finished with 18 points and seven assists for Hopkins (6-2).

The Hawks led 31-24 entering the fourth quarter. Jenks went 8 of 10 from the free-throw line, A.J. Mitchell scored four of her 10 points, and Allison Kowal-Safron had five of her 11, including one 3-pointer.

Mitchell finished with 15 rebounds.

Smith Academy 50, Pioneer Christian 17 — Emma Kelly outscored the Eagles by herself, dropping 19 points with 11 rebounds and eight assists.

Victoria Smiarowski added eight points and 11 rebounds, while Karlie Guimond scores seven points with seven rebounds for the Falcons (4-2).

Belchertown 71, Mohawk 22 — Sonia Dugger scored a career-high 12 points and added 10 rebounds in a home win. Elise Pikul also scored 12, while Emma LeBlanc had 11 for the Orioles (3-3).

Jenna Birks splashed three 3s for nine points.

Boys basketball

Northampton 56, Minnechaug 48 — Mike McCarthy scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a home win. He made nine free throws in the win, putting Minnechaug center Mike O’Toole in foul trouble early.

Jaeden Johndrow added 16 points for the Blue Devils (4-2). Anthony DeJesus scored 11.

Northampton led 37-24 after the first half.

Paulo Freire Social Justice Charter 81, Hopkins Academy 66 — Andrew Ciaglo canned four 3s and scored 21 points, but the Golden Hawks fell at home to the visitors from Holyoke. Caleb Graves added 14 points, and Braeden Tudryn scored 13 for Hopkins (3-3). Addison Phifer had 12 points.

Boys hockey

Easthampton 13, Southwick 0 — The defending Western Massachusetts Division 3A champions were no match for the Rams’ first-year varsity program at Lossone Rink.

The Eagles (5-3) led 4-0 after the first period and 7-0 after two.

Garren Fugiel scored five goals, including one short-handed, and added two assists. Christopher Tenczar had three goals and four assists.

Ely Boyle had two goals, while John Zatowski, Cole Growhoski and Mike McColgan (two assists) added a goal apiece. McColgan’s was short-handed.

Tyler Darling had two assists, while Jake Batchelder, Bryan Dudas, Tyler Galpin and Matt Sullivan had an assist each.

Tyler Cortis made 15 saves in the shutout.

Girls hockey

Williston 7, Lawrence 1 — Caroline DiFiore found the net twice in a home win. Kate Holmes, Christina Vote, Kare McDermott and Bryn Saarela also scored for the Wildcats. Tayah Sommer won in goal.
