PLAINFIELD – A two-story, single-family home caught fire early Tuesday morning, though firefighters were able to save the structure, according to Plainfield Assistant Fire Chief David Alvord.

The fire broke out at 281 Prospect St. where first responders witnessed flames showing from the second floor when they arrived at around 12:30 a.m., Alvord said. No one was injured in the blaze.

Plainfield Fire Captain Matthew Hardwick said the fire started from a double-walled metal chimney pipe that burned through the exterior siding. He said the initial responding fire engine quickly “knocked the fire down” and both residents of the house evacuated safely. The property is owned by Ralph M. Timberlake III, according to town property records.

Alvord said the house was saved from severe damage after firefighters doused the flames in freezing temperatures. He said firefighters stayed on scene for a few hours cleaning up the building once the fire was quelled. The Cummington Fire Department and Highland Ambulance also responded to the scene with mutual aid.

“The house is intact with some damage,” Alvord said. “This is a great save for our fire department.”
