Bill Newman opines on Elizabeth Warren, making a solid case that she would be a great president but questioning whether she could win. Snap out of it, Bill. Time for progressives to quit this self-defeating talk. I share your trepidation of losing the 2020 election to Trump or Pence, but the Democrats lost the last presidential election with a seriously flawed candidate. Isn’t it time to rally around a truly great candidate? Remember what people said about Bernie Sanders as he considered a Democratic primary run? Few thought the socialist from Vermont had a chance. Yet he began revolutionizing the Democratic Party, becoming one of the most respected politicians in the nation.

Elizabeth Warren is even better than Bernie! Warren was raised in a struggling middle class family in Oklahoma, rising to become a University of Texas law professor. Sen. Warren conceived the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to protect the working class, small businesses and students. She’s a high profile member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, committed to human rights and making globalization work for neglected American workers. America is long overdue for a woman president. Elizabeth Warren is free of many faults that lost votes for Hillary Clinton. Warren shares Bernie’s most popular positions without the stigma of calling herself a socialist. In congressional hearings, Warren courageously speaks truth to power and is a tough and effective debater. She easily stands up to the immature criticisms from the extreme right, while maintaining her composure. I can’t wait to see her skewer Trump in the debates.

Progressives, stop making excuses why Elizabeth Warren is not a superb general election candidate. Bill, I hope you were just having a down day about American electoral politics. As a furloughed federal worker, I commiserate. Volunteer to support Sen. Warren through canvassing, phone banking, print, online and radio campaigning. There is a huge population of disenchanted Americans who will rally to support Warren if we demonstrate our unequivocal support for the best candidate. Settling for a so-called “electable” Democratic candidate could be another tragic mistake. Let’s not make it again.
