Mayouri Yath hit a go-ahead layup with 20 seconds as the Amherst Regional girls basketball team held off Granby, 52-51, Monday in Granby.
The ending wasn’t without some drama though.
Granby coach Tom Burke opted not to call a timeout after Yath’s basket. The Rams turned the ball over on their possession and fouled Amherst forward Petua Mukimba.
She missed the front end of the one-and-one, and Granby called a timeout with 2.8 seconds left.
Julia Gauvin threw an inbounds pass to Nora Young, who dribbled twice and lined up a shot inside the 3-point line but missed at the buzzer.
“We got it right where we wanted it,” Burke said.
Erin Klaes made three 3s and led the Hurricanes (4-6, 2-0 Central) with 22 points. Delaney MacPhetres also reached double digits with 10 points. Yath added nine points, while Mukimba scored eight.
Young had 17 points for Granby (4-7, 1-1), while Faith Bergeron and Julia Frappier chipped in eight points each.
Amherst led by 10 after a quarter and banked in a 3 at the second-half buzzer to go up 32-21.
Granby led for most of the fourth quarter after scoring 18 in the third to retake the lead.
“Too many mistakes late,” Burke said.
