Marc Del Gaizo and Cale Makar each recorded a goal and an assist to lead No. 2 UMass past Maine, 4-2, on Friday in Orono, Maine.
The Minutemen (19-4-0, 11-2-0 Hockey East) had their hands full with the Black Bears, who never allowed UMass to seize full control. There were pockets of solid possession for UMass, but it did little to create traffic in front of Maine goalie Jeremy Swayman, who made 38 saves.
Del Gaizo opened the scoring just 3:01 into the game with a shot that handcuffed Swayman. Jacob Pritchard doubled the lead six minutes into the second period with his sixth power-play goal of the season.
Maine (8-12-3, 4-6-3 HEA) responded with five minutes left in the second period when Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup knocked home a rebound in front of Filip Lindberg. Mitchell Chaffee restored the Minutemenโs two-goal advantage a little less than four minutes into the third period with a snipe from just inside the face-off dot.
The Black Bears had one more scare for the Minutemen, capitalizing on the decision to pull their goalie with another goal on a scramble in front of Lindberg. But Makar scored an empty-net goal from deep in his own zone to ice the game and stake UMass to a three-point advantage atop Hockey East.
Lindberg made 25 saves in his first start since Dec. 7 to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Wesleyan 1, Amherst 0 โ The Mammoths unloaded 47 shots on Tim Sestak, but could not solve the Wesleyan goalie. Michael Cullen stopped 23 shots for Amherst (8-6-2, 5-4-2 NESCAC).
Colby 83, Amherst 73 โ Grant Robinson scored 23 points, but it was not enough for the 19th-ranked Mammoths (14-3, 2-2 NESCAC) at LeFrak Gymnasium.
Eric Sellew added 13 points and 10 rebounds for Amherst.
