The second-ranked UMass hockey team rallied in the third period, but the comeback fell short in a 4-3 loss to Maine, Saturday night in Orono.

John Leonard tied the game at 1-1 for UMass just before the first intermission, but the Black Bears took control in the second period.

Leonard had a penalty shot early in the second, but Maine goalie Jeremy Swayman stopped the Amherst native. Maine then added two power-play goals during a five-minute major on the Minutemen.

โ€œI thought the first period was pretty even and then we get the penalty shot to open the second,โ€ UMass coach Greg Carvel said. โ€œI thought that was a big turning point and then the five-minute major, obviously, was the biggest turning point. I give my team a lot of credit. We hadnโ€™t been down three goals I think this year going into the third period on the road and I wanted to see what we were made of. I challenged them and they came out and played a great third period. To me, for a small rink, that was a wild west game.โ€

Jacob Pritchard made it 4-2 with seventh power-play goal of the season 7:29 into the third. Mitchell Chaffee made it 4-3 with a short-handed goal at 9:23.

UMass outshot the Black Bears 56-34. Matt Murray made 30 saves for UMass (19-5-0, 11-3-0 Hockey East).
