Northampton senior Benjamin Gordon Sniffen won the 1,000-meter run and qualified for indoor nationals at the MSTCA Small Schools Invitational, Sunday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

Gordon Sniffen finished in 2 minutes, 31.78 seconds. His performance was just one of many for area athletes at the event.

Classmate Ethan Cooper won the 600 in 1:22.73, while the Northampton 4×400 relay (3:31.42) edged Amherst Regional (3:33.50) for first place.

Hamp’s 4×800 placed second (8:36.8) with Amherst third (8:41.91).

Eben Saveson was fifth (1:26.27) in the 600 for Northampton. Simon LeClair was third in the 1,000 (2:37.22) for the Blue Devils. Teammate Cole Lavalle was seventh in the 300 (36.45).

Amherst won the boys 4×200 relay in a meet-record 1:31.27. The old mark of 1:31.33 was set by Chelmsford in 2012. Northampton was third (1:33.96).

Amherst’s Willem Goff was eighth in the boys mile (4:39.43).

Northampton senior Emma Harder was fourth in the girls 300 (42.3), while the Hamp 4×800 relay was second (10:13.69). Amherst won the 4×8 in 10:09.39.

Amherst junior Danielle Beason was eighth in the 300 (43.08) as was classmate Isabela Shepard in the 600 (1:42.05).

Hurricanes senior Sophia Jacobs-Townsley was fifth in the mile (5:13.33).

Girls basketball

Smith Academy 30, Gateway Regional 14 — The Falcons held the Gators to two points in the first quarter, then put the Falcons Holiday Classic championship away in the third quarter when they took a 24-11 lead into the fourth, Sunday in Hatfield.

Karlie Guimond led Smith (7-6) with 10 points, while Emma Kelly added eight. Victoria Smiarowski and Erin Gilrein each chipped in six points.

Peyton Bucko led the Gators (9-5) with six points.

Wahconah 51, Hampshire Regional 35 — Maddie Pond had 12 points, while Lila Labrie and Maggie Rubeck each had nine, but the Raiders (8-6) fell in the Coaches vs. Cancer showcase, Saturday at Hoosac Valley in Cheshire.

Nordic skiing

The Amherst Regional boys team went 1-1 Saturday at the Berkshire Ski League meet held at Prospect Mountain in Woodford, Vermont.

Amherst beat Mohawk, 13-23, but fell to Lenox, 12-28.

Jesse Barker Plitkin was 12th overall in 19:14, while Nor Young was 19th (20:06) for the Hurricanes.

The Amherst girls fell to both Lenox, 12-30, and Mohawk, 13-25. Stella Wenczel was 14th in 22:18 for the ‘Canes.

Ice hockey

Amherst 4, Ludlow 2 — The Hurricanes (10-2-0, 5-0-0 Fay) stayed perfect in league play with the win at The Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield, Saturday night.
