With 6.4 seconds on the clock and the Smith Academy girls basketball team trailing one, Karlie Guimond took the inbounds pass and went straight for the hoop.

She hit a layup as time expired, lifting the Falcons over McCann Tech 40-39 on Monday in Hatfield.

“She’s the fastest one on the team,” Smith Academy coach Fran Lafond said. “When you have that much time people get out of the way to avoid a foul.”

It was Smith Academy’s 10th victory of the season, clinching the Falcons a spot in the Division 4 tournament.

Guimond finished with nine points.

Victoria Smiarowski led Smith Academy (10-7, 2-3 Franklin West) with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Emma Kelly added eight points, 12 rebounds and nine blocks.

Taeghan Cavanaugh had nine rebounds to go along with her four points.

The Falcons trailed 17-6 after a quarter but tied the game by the end of the third.
