Northampton’s Jake Ross helped the Springfield College men’s basketball team bolster its NEWMAC tournament chances, scoring 30 points in a 74-67 win over WPI on Wednesday.

The Williston Northampton grad added 15 points, seven assists, two steals and two blocks in 30 minutes. In the game’s final 4 minutes, 31 seconds, Ross scored 11 straight points to help put the game away.

South Hadley’s Cam Earle hit four 3s and scored 12 points.

The Pride (10-14, 7-6 NEWMAC) won their third game in a row. They’re tied with Coast Guard at 7-6 in the conference standings but own the tiebreaker.

Hamilton 81, Amherst 77 — Grant Robinson had 17 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in a road loss. He put the Mammoths up 76-75 with a jump shot with 44 seconds left, but the Continentals closed the game on a 6-1 run.

Fru Che led the Mammoths (20-4, 7-3 NESCAC) with 18 points. Joseph Schneider scored 14, while C.J. Bachman added 11 points off the bench.

Hamilton shot 21 free throws compared to eight for Amherst.

Women’s basketball

Clark 73, Mount Holyoke 28 — Northampton grad Maya Kerstetter scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds with three assists in her final home game for Clark.

Katlyn Grover led the Lyons (1-23, 0-15 NEWMAC) with 12 points.

South Hadley’s Mikayla McEwen grabbed five rebounds and had two blocks for Mount Holyoke.

Saint Joseph’s 55, UMass 54 — Destiney Philoxy scored 15 points with six rebounds and four assists in a road loss. Jessica George added 11, while Hailey Leidel had 10.
