NORTHAMPTON – A woman accused of fatally hitting another woman with a vehicle in an Easthampton crosswalk was arraigned in Northampton District Court on Friday.

A plea of not guilty was entered on behalf of Ruby Schmid, 62, of Easthampton, who is charged with negligent motor vehicle homicide, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and a civil crosswalk infraction. Negligent motor vehicle homicide is a misdemeanor that can carry up to 2 ½ years in jail and a 15-year loss of license.

The crash occurred on Dec. 3 on Cottage Street and resulted in the death of Denise Herzog, 63, of Easthampton.

The arraignment took place before Judge Maureen Walsh.

The defendant was released on her personal recognizance, on the conditions that she not operate a motor vehicle and not leave Massachusetts without permission of the court.

A pretrial hearing was set for April 18, and the prosecution said that the case will remain in District Court.
