High schools: Hopkins Academy girls basketball rallies to beat Frontier in overtime

The Hopkins Academy girls basketball team made a furious comeback to force overtime, then held on for a 42-41 win over Frontier Regional, Monday in South Deerfield.

The Red Hawks led by seven with just under four minutes to go in regulation before the Golden Hawks chipped away at the lead. Frontier (9-10, 4-4 Franklin North) had a chance to take the lead with two free throws late, but couldn’t convert, sending the game to overtime tied at 38.

In overtime, the Red Hawks went 3-for-4 from the free-throw line while the Golden Hawks (14-6, 4-4) hit two shots to seal the victory.

Samantha Jenks led the way with a game-high 11 points for the Golden Hawks. Thea Hanscom and Allison Kowal-Safron each added nine.

Marie Diemand and Amelia Sobieski scored 10 apiece for the Red Hawks.

Frontier Regional qualified for the postseason despite the loss. Thanks to Greenfield’s win over Mahar, the Red Hawks finished tied with the Senators for second place in the Franklin North.

Ware 30, Gateway 9 — Grace Van Buren scored four points, while Becca Herman had three for the Gators (14-6).

Pope Francis 62, Smith Academy 27 — Emma Kelly had 10 points and six rebounds, while Taeghan Cavanaugh added 10 rebounds, but the Falcons (11-9, 3-5 Franklin West) fell in their regular-season finale in Springfield.

Boys basketball

Putnam 70, Amherst 55 – Akeme Hilson-Mallory finished with 14 points for the Hurricanes (3-16, 1-8 Valley League), who fell at home. Taylen Pope and Steven Steele each had nine in defeat.

Palmer 66, Hampshire 47 — Nick Pellegrini had 15 points and Justin Forest added 14, but the Raiders (4-15, 1-6 Bi-County East) fell on the road.

The Panthers (10-10, 5-3) qualified for the postseason with the win.

Ware 60, Granby 49 – Nate Breault hit four 3-pointers and had a game-high 18 points but the Rams (12-7, 3-5 Bi-County League West) fell at home.

Brandon Wishart added 13 points and Kyle Murdock 10 Each had a pair of 3s.

Boys hockey

Greenfield 3, Ludlow 2 — Aidan Roche scored twice and Kevin Baumann added one goal as the Green Wave (16-2-2) won at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.

Riley Drew made 19 saves in the win.

Girls hockey

Longmeadow 4, Mansfield 2 — Northampton High senior Brigitte Goeler-Slough scored as the Lancers (10-3) won at home.
