Kerry Fleming anchored Simmons’ winning 800-yard freestyle relay as the Sharks opened Day 1 of the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Men’s and Women’s Championship in history fashion, Thursday at MIT.

The Northampton native swam the final leg of the record-breaking relay, which finished in 7 minutes, 40.31 seconds. That time shattered Williams’ 1995 mark of 7:46.29.

Maria Soraghan, Aine Scholand and Laura Simpson joined Fleming, who closed with a 1:54.89 split to beat Roger Williams by over 21 seconds.

Women’s lacrosse

Boston College 25, UMass 14 — The Minutewomen trailed 15-8 at halftime en route to the loss at Garber Field to the top team in the nation.

Hannah Palau and Kiley Anderson each had three goals, while Kaitlyn Cerasi and Cassidy Doster had two apiece for UMass (1-1).

Women’s basketball

Springfield 48, Smith 46 — Lauren Bondi had 15 points and Kennedy Guest-Pritchett added 13 points and 10 rebounds, but the Pioneers (21-7) fell at home in the NEWMAC Tournament semifinals.
