EASTHAMPTON — An electrical fire at a duplex early on Friday morning injured three firefighters while leaving residents unscathed.
At 2:22 a.m. Easthampton Public Safety received a call about a fire at 13-15 Pine Street, and when firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke in the duplex and a rapidly spreading fire, according to a statement from the fire department.
Northampton, Holyoke, Southampton, South Hadley and Westfield assisted in fighting the fire. Three firefighters were injured, one of who went to the hospital and has already been discharged, according to Deputy Fire Chief Wayne Hennemann. Easthampton firefighters stayed at the scene until 7 a.m.
All residents escaped, according to a statement from the state Department of Fire Services. They will be displaced, but its unclear for how long, Hennemann said.
The blaze left more than $200,000 worth of damage, according to the Easthampton Fire Department statement.
Easthampton Fire and Police Departments and State Police investigated the cause and determined that the fire started in the bathroom fan. Electrical fires are one of the top causes of home fire deaths, State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey said in a statement.
