Katy McClellan led four players in double figures with 21 points as Smith College defeated U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, 74-51, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at Bowdoin College.
Elle Jo Whalen chipped in 15 points while Lauren Bondi added 12 as the Pioneers advance to face the host Polar Bears, who defeated Hunter 93-73, on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Kennedy Guest-Pritchett recorded a double-double with 12 points and a team-best 14 rebounds. The Pioneers (22-6) dominated the interior, racking up a 43-28 advantage on the glass and 42-24 edge in points in the paint.
Amherst 84, Rosemont 53 — The Mammoths used a 25-6 run late in the second half to pull away in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament in Rochester, New York.
The Mammoths (24-4) were paced by Fru Che’s 18 points and Grant Robinson’s 13 points. They will face Rochester, which won 85-68 over Farmingdale State, in the second round at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Amherst held a 54-31 rebounding advantage and had five players secure at least six rebounds. Eric Sellew led the way with 11 boards, which he combined with 10 points for a double-double. C.J. Bachmann also contributed 10 points in the victory.
The Mammoths held Rosemont to just 27 percent shooting, including 22.3 percent in the second half. Meanwhile they shot 50 percent from the floor themselves, heating up over the final 20 minutes to make 56.8 percent of their attempts.
Softball
The Minutewomen heated up with a sweep on the opening day of the Purple and Gold Invitational at East Carolina Softball Stadium in Greenville, North Carolina.
UMass beat Columbia, 5-0, in Game 1. The Minutewomen rallied late to beat Winthrop, 3-2 in eight innings.
Senior outfielder Kaitlyn Stavinoha’s RBI double brought in the winning run against Winthrop.
Stavinoha’s first RBI double came with two outs in the third and pulled UMass (5-7) within 2-1. A Madison Gimpl sacrifice fly to left tied the game in the fifth.
Riley Gregoire was 2-for-4 with two runs. Stavinoha was 3-for-4, while Hannah Bunker added two hits.
Quinn Breidenbach earned the win in relief. She allowed two hits over four innings. Kiara Oliver struck out one for the save.
Oliver allowed no hits over 5⅔ innings against Columbia. She settled for the two-hitter with two strikeouts.
Stavinoha was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run.
